FREN 303: Women, Royalty & Power: Preparing Images

Spring 2021 - A guide to finding and citing images of 17th and 18th century France

Tips for Preparing Your Images

  1. Consider whether you want to show the full image, or crop to show a detail of a larger image. Keep in mind that some Creative Commons-licensed images (e.g. "ND" for "No Derivatives") might not allow adaptations like cropping! We'll stick to images that are public domain or available under more flexible licenses (CC-BY, CC-BY-NC).

  2. Download your image and examine in a photo editor if possible. How large is the image (its dimensions in pixels)? Images that are too small (fewer pixels) will look blurry and pixelated if sized up.

  3. While you can crop your images in Google Sites, it's easy to "undo" accidentally by clicking the "Uncrop" button.uncrop icon on Google Sites' image edit menu Try uploading a version you have pre-cropped in a photo editor to avoid this.

  4. Make sure you add alt text to your image to make sure it's accessible to those using screen readers. See Write good Alt Text to describe images from Harvard University Digital Accessibility for some tips on how to compose this.

  5. Enter your citation and Creative Commons license information (if your image was licensed) as a caption to the image. (This will allow screen readers to attach your citation directly to the relevant image.)

To create a caption, while in the Edit view, click to select the image > in the menu that appears at the top of the image, click Three-dot menu for "More"and then Add caption. See Citing Images tab for instructions on how to format your citations and license information.
