Create an Account

In order to use IPUMS, you will need to create an account! Select an IPUMS Project (USA, CPS, Global Health, etc.) from the IPUMS Homepage, and then register for an account.

Top IPUMS Tips!

Here are a few of our top tips for using IPUMS!

  1. START EARLY! It can take a while for IPUMS to process your data extract requests.
  2. Download your data immediately upon receiving the email link. You only have 72 hours to download the data, or you will have to submit a new request.
  3. Create an account for each IPUMS project you intend to use.
  4. Read all of the metadata and codebook information carefully.
  5. Remember to change the data format to be Stata compatible - .dat.
  6. Ask for help! Don't hesitate to reach out with any questions - we are here and happy to help you!
