Top IPUMS Tips!

Here are a few of our top tips for using IPUMS!

START EARLY! It can take a while for IPUMS to process your data extract requests.
Download your data immediately upon receiving the email link. You only have 72 hours to download the data, or you will have to submit a new request.
Create an account for each IPUMS project you intend to use.
Read all of the metadata and codebook information carefully.
Remember to change the data format to be Stata compatible - .dat.

Use the IPUMS Database to Find Datasets

IPUMS
Includes:
- IPUMS International (harmonized data from 1960-present, covering 397 million people in 185 censuses)
- IPUMS USA (harmonized data on people in the U.S. census and American Community Survey, from 1850-present)
- IPUMS-CPS (harmonized data on people in the Current Population Survey, every March from 1962-present).
- Integrated Health Interview Series (harmonized data on people in the U.S. National Health Interview Survey from 1960s-present)
- American Time Use Survey-X (harmonized data from 2003-present on how U.S. adults divide their time among activities)
