Data planet pulls in data from lots of different sources on lots of different subjects - health, education, government, banking, etc. It is useful because it gets data from different sources into one format, making it easy to merge and work with. Preferred brand of whisky? How often they attend horse races? Lots of crazy stuff in there! The data coverage varies by subject (both in time and space). Some variables go all the way down to the census tract level, others are just available for the country or state as a whole. Some variables go back in time a few decades, others just the last few years.

ICPSR stores data created by both academic and government researchers. Most of the data is on Social Science topics, but lots of other things are in here too. It can be useful to use the "search for variable" tool to look for specific variables you need - sometimes they are hiding in datasets that sound unrelated.

Roper iPOLL contains survey data going back to the 1930s up to the present (newest surveys from a week or so ago). Lots of fun to play with! Look for surveys with the Roper Express icon - if you see the X under a question, it means you can download the raw survey data.
